It is a platform for us to share our struggles and successes on this journey to achieving a healthy lifestyle balance. Whether you’re a stay at home mum, a working mum, a mum to be, or a mum at heart this platform is for you! As always I hope that you will find this post helpful.
I’m sure that every mother can relate to the struggle and stress of trying to provide healthy meals that the whole family can enjoy. Even with my small family of 4, I know first hand how difficult it is to satisfy different ages, pallets and preferences with one meal. And I am not an advocate for consistently making multiple meals for different family members (unless for unavoidable, medical reasons) as it results in too much time being spent in the kitchen and it’s honestly not a sustainable way to go through life. I don’t know about you but I would rather spend my time making memories with my family than be stuck in the kitchen for hours and hours on end. Earlier this year I shared a few tips on how to make healthy meals for the whole family here.
One thing that I have noticed as I have become more health conscious and educated on healthy nutrition is that no matter how “healthy” most store bought items might be advertised as, there are always one or two questionable ingredients in the mix. For this reason I have adopted the motto “Why buy it when you can make it?”
Making your own items from scratch has various benefits including;
- Being aware of EXACTLY what is in your food
- Creating a fun activity for you to share with you kids. (Kids are more likely to eat something “healthy” if they participated in making it)
- Saving you A TON OF MONEY; you can make almost anything yourself at a fraction of the cost of buying it because most ingredients can be purchased in bulk.
- Making an even healthier version of whatever you desire in your own kitchen because there are no need for preservatives and copious amounts of salt!
If you are not sure where to start with this, there are a large variety of healthy recipes available online and in healthy cook-books, or if you are like me you can also experiment every now and then to develop your own healthy and yummy recipes.
Today I would like to share one of my absolute favorites to make for my family because it can be very easily “customized” to satisfy every family member’s taste and desire.
Homemade Lean Beef Patties
Toddler (1yr old) Plate
Small Child (4yr old) Plate
~700g extra lean ground beef
1/8 cup breadcrumbs
1/4 cup chopped onions
Spices to taste (I use sea salt, pepper, thyme and some spicy Mrs Dash)
1.) Add the ground beef to a bowl and mash it up well.
2.) Add egg and mix in.
3.) Add in onions, breadcrumbs and spices and mix well.
4.) Measure out ~1/4 cup per patty and flatten.
5.) Use parchment paper to separate the patties if you’d like to freeze them.
6.) Grill in oven at 350-375 deg for about 20 mins or you can use an electric grill.
7.) Serve as desired 😀
Recipe makes ~10 patties at about 145 calories each. (Compare at ~200 calories per patty for the average store bought lean beef patty)
