Hello and welcome to Bethel Fit Mum! I am a Women’s Health advocate primarily focused on Postpartum Fitness. Bethel Fit Mum was born out of my own personal journey to a healthier me after having my second child. Here’s my story…
I am a mother to two beautiful children, a boy currently 3.5 years old and a girl currently 10 months old. Both my pregnancies were not very healthy – I was weighing over 200 lbs by the time I had both of my children which is ALOT for my 5ft 3in frame. In my second pregnancy, I gained 20lbs before I was out of my first trimester and my doctor was actually very worried. This kind of set off a red flag for me, but even though I tried to be healthier the second time around and do things different, I struggled because I had not been committed to a healthy lifestyle prior to getting pregnant. I resolved in my heart that I would take better care of myself after having the baby.
After giving birth in February 2015 to a 9lb 14oz baby via c-section I got right to work. Of course I was unable to exercise for almost 2 months but I started eating much better than I had after my first pregnancy. The initial changes were small, I controlled my portions better and ate more veges. By the time I actually started exercising at 7 weeks postpartum I had already dropped 35+lbs.
Once I was cleared to exercise, I started small – 15-30 mins of light to moderate exercise 3-4 times a week (as my infant and then 2 year old allowed). I downloaded an app on my phone to help me track what I was eating – there is something about knowing that what you’re about to eat has 300g of fat in it that kind of puts you off (lol). I also armed myself with a few useful exercise apps to help me with my exercises.
As a nursing mother, I was not able to leave my baby for long periods of time, so going to the gym was completely out of the question. I did all my exercise at home for first few months sometimes having to use my kids as “weights” to keep them entertained. By the time my baby was 6 months old I had lost almost 50lbs and was smaller than my pre-pregnancy-two weight.
I am currently 10 months postpartum and over 60lbs down. I have made healthy eating and exercise a lifestyle. All it takes is dedication and perseverance which I believe every woman possesses.
